The genesis of the Indian Institute of Science traces back to a historic voyage across the Pacific Ocean in 1893 on board the SS Empress of India, where industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata and spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda engaged in a visionary discussion regarding India's self-reliance in science, indigenous engineering, and industrial modernization.
Jamsetji Tata created an endowment of nearly half his personal wealth to establish a world-class scientific research institution. The princely state of Mysore, led by Maharani Kempananjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhana and subsequently Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, generously donated 371 acres of prime land in Bengaluru along with substantial financial subventions. The institute was formally chartered on May 27, 1909, with Nobel Laureate Sir William Ramsay recommending its academic structure and Morris Travers serving as its founding Director.
First Indian Director of IISc (1933–1937) and Head of Physics. Discovered the Nobel Prize-winning Raman Effect and founded the Indian Academy of Sciences on campus.
Father of the Indian Nuclear Program. Initiated cosmic ray research in the Department of Physics at IISc under Sir C.V. Raman before establishing TIFR and BARC.
Father of the Indian Space Program. Conducted cosmic radiation studies at IISc, laying the intellectual groundwork for the establishment of ISRO.
Longest-serving Director of IISc and Chairman of ISRO. Pioneered aeronautical engineering and supersonic wind tunnels at IISc while orchestrating India's space launch vehicle capabilities.
Former Director and world-renowned solid-state chemist. Established the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit (SSCU) and Materials Research Centre (MRC).
Padma Vibhushan aerospace scientist who transformed fluid dynamics, cloud mechanics, and the design of India's Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas).
